Forrest Pierce, Ruin of the Cypress for Alto Flute and PianoRuin of the Cypress (2007)

Alto Flute and Piano. 15 minutes.

Program Notes

The Ruin of the Cypress depicts the wind-wracked form of a lone tree on a sea cliff. Inspired by a ghazal of the Persian sufi poet Hafez, Cypress was commissioned, and has been performed over thirty times by Mary Fukushima and Michael Kirkendoll of DuoSolo. (www.duosolo.com) "I am like an elegant cypress whose face and form your beauty ruined," writes Hafez. The form of the single-movement work is inspired by the ecstatic virtuoso Qawwals of the Chishtiyya lineage of Sufism.
